What will our work together look like?
You get to choose between talk therapy, more structured EMDR, or equine-assisted psychotherapy sessions.
In our first session together, I will do an in-depth assessment to get to know you. We will talk about your goals and make a plan for our work together. The first session is 90 minutes.
Talk Therapy Sessions
In talk therapy sessions, my style is not to just sit there, say “mm-hmm” and nod as you talk. I’m going to be honest and direct with you, while also being compassionate and empathetic to what you’re going through. Our sessions may include changing your thought patterns, learning new ways to cope with stress, and finding new paths forward with relationship struggles you’re stuck in.
EMDR Sessions
In EMDR sessions, we are going to dive deep into working through past trauma. The first step is to make sure you’re well-resourced and know how to cope when things may start to feel overwhelming in this work. Next, we will move on to using tapping, sounds, and/or eye movements (depending on what’s a good fit for you) to change the way your brain has a traumatic memory stored. The cool thing about EMDR is that you don’t have to tell me all of the details about the trauma you’ve experienced; in fact, you don’t have to tell me anything specific and you’ll still reap the benefits of this type of therapy.
EMDR can help with…
Feeling less anxious/depressed
feeling less overwhelmed by trauma triggers
Reducing addiction cravings
Managing phobias
Improving sleep
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy
Because horses can pick up on emotions easily, the main thing we focus on during our sessions together is finding ways to help you be in touch with your body and what you’re feeling emotionally. You’ll learn how to develop a relationship with the horse slowly but surely by starting with ground work. Groundwork includes learning how to approach and touch the horse, as well as guiding the horse through obstacles. Mounted work (rhymthic riding) is optional and will only be considered after sufficient groundwork is completed. During sessions, we will have regular conversations about what you’re noticing and learning about yourself from this experience. You’ll find yourself learning skills from this work that will then help you with real-life challenges.
